Custom Christmas Advent Calendar – Continued

The end is in sight now, this is the time I have to kinda keep an eye on myself.  It’s not that I can’t wait for the project to be finished it’s more a case of I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s done.  Since I rarely have a plan on any project, each step is a bit of a surprise.  But the end result is like opening a present and I always want to be careful not to rush to that point and miss adding any bits that I might have sped through towards the finale.  So, deep breath, and on to the drawers.

The front of these drawers are 1 5/8″ x 1 5/8″ and I’ve gone through and cut out all the numbered ‘days’ to the correct size.  On each drawer front, after making sure it’s squared properly to the drawer, from the back side of the paper I draw the outline of the half-moon cutout where the drawer’s ‘finger pull’ is.

Paper punches to the rescue, again.  A 3/4″ circle punch fits this dimension almost perfectly.

I just turn the punch over, insert the paper until I’m lined up with my pencil mark – and punch.  I prefer to use a white glue to glue on my papers to the drawer fronts.  Make sure the pieces all lay down smooth with no air pockets and I use a bone folder to go around the edges making sure they’re all sealed down nicely.

Be sure you don’t put them into the unit until the glue has completely dried.  If you put them in too soon then you risk pulling off paper and/or paint the next time you slide a drawer out.

I just love the Vintage colors and art work, this really came together well.  I have to apologize for my craft lights though- they’re really bright and while that’s great for the crafting aspect, it’s not so wonderful for taking pictures and tend to alter the real colors a bit, but I think you can get a good idea of what it looks like, anyways.

But now there’s that big gaping hole of a fireplace.  Since this project has taken on the persona of a Classic Vintage Advent Calendar my vision for that space is running towards a comfortably burning fire.  But since this is a major portion of this project’s look – it can’t be just any old ‘fake’ fire.

Next up – The Fire and Finale
